Exchange Program

How does it work?

This method of silver recovery is used for smaller applications and is where the silver is recovered from the silver bearing fixer solution via an ion exchange process.

Silver is recovered when the silver bearing fixer solution flows through the canister and makes contact with the iron or steel wool. When the solution comes in contract with the iron or steel wool an ion exchange occurs. This ion exchange results in the transformation of the metallic silver in the fixer becoming a solid form. This metallic silver usually ends up as a sludge at the bottom of a steel wool canister or attaches to the iron core (like a magnet to steel) and builds up.

Silver exchange canisters must be changed out periodically for they are limited to the amount of gallons of fixer solution that passes throw it. When properly maintained it will result in meeting local, state and federal regulations of less the 5 ppm (parts per million) discharge to the waste water treatment plants.

There are many types and styles of silver recovery canisters in use today. They all have one thing in common and that is remove the silver from the fixer prior to the drain.

These canisters are inexpensive, for compliance use and must be changed out periodically based on the amount of gallons used.
